Driving Your Job Search Bus
If finding the position, you want is a full-time job itself, one advantage is that you are your own boss and career bus driver! You determine which companies to approach. While you still need to look over the big national job board like Indeed and LinkedIn remember that many people are also looking at what you see and like. That’s ok and expected. So how can you be different? What sets you apart is you controlling your targets. Before beginning your job search take a moment to create a list of companies you might enjoy working for – regardless of whether they have openings that fit you or not. Choose a good-sized list. Once you have that then daily go on to their web sites to monitor new openings. This will make your chosen list of companies more familiar to you. You will quickly become better acquainted with their corporate culture, events, products and services. So should the time come to meet with them about a position you will have already done your homework and preparation for that meeting. You will be driving your career bus rather than being at the mercy of random positions that pop up on a popular job board. If it turns out that the companies you target don’t have a suitable opening you can still reach out to their HR Department to introduce yourself and ask them to consider you for future opportunities. That will demonstrate to them your ambition and positive attitude. So, consider creating your own “favorite companies” list. You will feel positive about controlling your job search and not having it control you! Happy Hunting!
